Retaining walls

Retaining walls are bottom-to-top solutions, meaning the purpose is to reach a higher top-wall elevation by using backfill contained within the wall fascia.
Retaining walls are ideal when the excavation stability is not an imminent concern or in those cases where there is not excavation involved, but rather there is the need to borrow backfill material. Typical applications for retaining wall are mine primary crusher walls, support of roadways, road access, bringing sites to desired grade, stream bank protection, slope stabilization.

We offer three main categories of retaining walls: gravity wall, MSE walls and anchored walls. Each category can be designed as permanent or temporary wall.
A gravity retaining wall provides retention through its own mass. These are monolithic structures resembling a trapezoidal shape with a relatively large base. Higher the wall and wider the base must be. Our engineering department will provide details in the plans. Gravity retaining walls do not necessarily require structural backfill. However proper foundation and drainage considerations shall be accounted for in the design phase.

Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls are a combination of structural backfill (clean crushed rock), reinforcements and the fascia. The reinforcements are usually planar or strips and can be made of geosynthetic materials or metal. The reinforcements interact with the structural backfill to provide the stability level required.
Anchored walls (or soil nail walls) are generally used to minimize backfill material quantities and typically they can be installed where is possible to maintain the existing soil profile. The stability relies on post-tensioned anchors.
For each wall type there is a wide variety of face features available, based on structural, architectural and environmental requirements.
